The RRO and You
Is your smoke control system up to scratch? The RRO (Regulatory Reform (Fire) Order 2005) is a piece of UK government legislation that ensures fire safety systems in buildings are properly designed, specified, installed and maintained.
The legislation makes it an obligation for building owners, employers or facilities managers – aka the building’s ‘responsible person’ – to ensure the installed smoke control system is fully operational at all times that the building is occupied; these are life critical safety systems with zero margin for error.
A lot of designated responsible people know considerably more about their building’s fire alarm systems than their smoke control systems, but they’re equal in the eyes of the RRO and failure to comply can – and has – led to six-figure fines for individuals.
