Shopping Centre Service Yard Smoke Extraction

Airvent design and install for Shopping Centre

Since its opening in 1997, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway Bristol has received over 14 million visitors a year. With over 130 retail outlets over two levels, The Mall is one of the largest shopping centres in the whole of the South West – covering approximately 995,000ft2.

Airvent was contracted to provide a comprehensive replacement and maintenance service for The Mall’s delivery and service yard, utilising its experience and knowledge to reduce running costs and energy consumption without compromising safety.

The service yard project at The Mall shopping centre first required an in-depth analysis of the existing smoke extraction system, with the results compared against those expected of today’s design standards and requirements.

The original system was sizeable, typical of the type of design used at the time of installation and was both environmentally unsound and costly – requiring a great deal of power to enable its operation.

Airvent was able to simplify the design by reducing it to four modern 55kw extraction fans that only operate when the carbon monoxide detection system indicates a need – greatly reducing its overall running costs.

While the existing fans were being replaced with their updated counterparts, Airvent ensured that the system as a whole remained operable to maintain smoke and fire safety. Site logistics were also very carefully considered, as this project required the use of a 100 tonne crane over the course of two weekends.

“Airvent’s expertise ensured all work was effectively managed around the constraints of its client – efficiently liaising with other on site trades to ensure work was completed with minimal disruption.”
