Managing fumes at MOD Marham | Brakel Airvent

Managing fumes at MOD Marham

Overview

The new hangar for the USA air force in MOD Marham (also home to the RAF’s Tornado GR4 Force and 10,000 personnel) houses America’s latest F35 fighter jets in Europe. Brakel Airvent was appointed to undertake smoke control and ventilation works thanks to a long and successful approved contractor relationship with Integral and the ability to win a competitive tender on the back of its proven abilities and service provision, plus the high quality of products and systems needed to meet the required levels.

Each jet is worth $100m+ so their proper protection is imperative. With highly combustible fuels on site the risks of fire are obvious, so their mitigation is not something to be taken lightly.

Operations

Our ventilation system was required to integrate with a foam fire suppression setup for emergency situations. But that’s only part of the picture; the same ventilation system we installed for smoke control would also be called upon to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for the engineers and mechanics working on these high-precision aircraft, ensuring any build-up of fumes is managed by extraction and replacement with clean, fresh air – all without having a negative impact on temperature and comfort conditions.

Brakel Airvent utilised thermally broken Brakel ventilation products, manufactured to the required EN12101 standards to minimise the risk of leaking or condensation build-up. These highly insulative products (such as the Duo Therma) also offer benefits in terms of ongoing energy savings; a vital component when it comes to considering the needs of the end-user of any building.
