JD Sports Refurbishments

Store refurbishments at JD Sports led to Kingspan Light + Air being appointed to undertake key revisions to the existing smoke control systems.

Stores at Highcross, Leicester and Merry Hill, Dudley, have benefited from upgrades to vital life safety systems as part of an overall programme of improvements. Merry Hill’s works were part of a £100m updating of the shopping centre, with the new 17,000 sq ft sportswear shop featuring an in-compartment mechanical smoke extract system.

This system is engineered to actively extract smoke if a fire breaks out, with rooftop fan assemblies drawing the smoke out of the building. This approach allows for clearer means of escape for building occupants and allows firefighters easier access to approach and tackle the blaze. Smoke extract systems are mandated by Approved Document B although Kingspan Light + Air’s approach utilises a mechanical rather than passive shaft system, taking up less space and integrating with the building’s smoke safety system controls. As Airvent has joined the Kingspan Light + Air fold, so it brings expertise and equipment in the field of mechanical ventilation.

Kingspan Light + Air undertook all works, from fire engineering design to specifying the appropriate equipment and installing it via its national team of experienced and highly trained site engineers. The company has also been assigned to undertake ongoing long-term maintenance for the system, ensuring the safety of staff, shoppers and facilities while allowing the client to remain legally compliant with fire safety regulations.

A similar approach was adopted for the Highcross store.
